Hungarian PM Demands President’s Immediate Resignation

(MENAFN) Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar escalated his confrontation with President Tamas Sulyok on Monday, demanding his immediate resignation and setting a hard deadline of May 31 for the president to step down voluntarily.

In a pointed statement published on X, the U.S. social media platform, Magyar launched a sweeping indictment of Sulyok's two-year tenure, accusing him of abandoning political neutrality and operating in lockstep with the camp of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

"Tamas Sulyok has failed every test of human, legal, and political suitability during his inglorious two years in office as President of Hungary," Magyar wrote, branding the president "Viktor Orban's puppet."

The opposition leader further alleged that Sulyok had distorted constitutional responsibilities and made misleading statements about bilateral meetings and private exchanges between the two men. Magyar argued that Hungary deserves a head of state who embodies "the entire nation" — not a single political faction.

His closing words left little room for ambiguity: "Mr. President, you must leave. And you will leave."

Sulyok pushed back defiantly in a separate interview with news portal Index, dismissing the resignation demands and rejecting the political framing of the accusations as constitutionally irrelevant.

"The Hungarian Constitution does not include the categories of incompetence and unworthiness. These are political value judgments," the president said.

The power struggle unfolds against a transformed political landscape. Magyar's Tisza Party dealt a historic blow to Orban in the April 12 parliamentary elections, ending his 16-year grip on power and triggering a sweeping political transition across the EU member state.
