Magyar Escalates Pressure on Hungarian President Sulyok

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar on Monday reiterated his demand for President Tamas Sulyok to step down, sharply criticizing his tenure and alleging serious shortcomings in leadership. Magyar stated that Sulyok had "having failed every test of human, legal, and political suitability during his inglorious two years in office as President of Hungary."

In a post shared on the US social media platform X, Magyar claimed that the president had aligned himself with former Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s governing camp, arguing that the presidency had not upheld political impartiality. He further accused Sulyok of being politically reliant on the ruling Fidesz party.

Magyar repeated his earlier criticism, writing that "Tamas Sulyok has failed every test of human, legal, and political suitability during his inglorious two years in office as President of Hungary," and described the president as "Viktor Orban's puppet." He also alleged that Sulyok had distorted constitutional responsibilities and made misleading remarks about bilateral meetings and private discussions between them.

According to Magyar, Hungary needs a head of state who speaks for "the entire nation" rather than representing a single political faction. He escalated his call for resignation by declaring, "Mr. President, you must leave. And you will leave," and set a deadline of May 31 for Sulyok to step down voluntarily.

The controversy comes after Sulyok’s interview with a news portal, where he rejected Magyar’s resignation demand and stated that he did not view the political allegations as relevant under Hungary’s Constitution.
