Merz Hails Hungary’s Election Shift
During a press briefing in Berlin, Merz extended his congratulations to Hungarian opposition figure Peter Magyar, whose Tisza party achieved a sweeping victory — securing a two-thirds parliamentary majority — in Sunday’s ballot. The result brought an end to Orban’s 16-year period in power.
“This shows that our democratic societies are clearly much more resilient against Russian propaganda and other foreign interference attempts in such elections,” Merz stated, referencing the backing Orban had obtained from Moscow as well as from the Trump administration.
He characterized the development as “one of the best pieces of news” from the previous day, commending the “high degree of resilience” demonstrated by a democratic system such as Hungary’s.
“Right-wing populism suffered a heavy defeat in Hungary yesterday,” Germany’s conservative leader remarked. “And this doesn’t just affect Hungary. Hungary is sending a very clear signal against right-wing populism worldwide. In that respect, yesterday was a good day.”
Merz further voiced optimism that the governmental transition would facilitate smoother decision-making within the European Union. He emphasized that Orban’s repeated use of veto power had earlier hindered unified EU stances, especially regarding military and financial assistance to Ukraine and stricter sanctions on Russia.
