Hungarian PM Threatens to Suspend Gas Deliveries to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán escalated an intensifying energy standoff with Kyiv on Wednesday, threatening to progressively cut off gas supplies to Ukraine unless transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored.

In a Facebook post, Orbán declared that Budapest would begin scaling back gas deliveries to Ukraine, redirecting remaining volumes into domestic storage — a move he framed as an imperative response to mounting energy security concerns.

"Until Ukraine provides oil, it will not receive gas from Hungary," Orbán said, accusing Kyiv of deliberately obstructing the Druzhba pipeline's operation and "attacking" infrastructure supplying Hungary.

The Hungarian leader further announced that Budapest would table a formal proposal at the government's next scheduled meeting, underlining the urgency of rebuilding national energy reserves ahead of the colder months.

A Deepening Rift Over Energy and Leverage
Hungary has consistently maintained that it must "break the oil blockade" to guarantee stable energy supplies and protect domestically regulated fuel prices — which Orbán has repeatedly touted as among the most competitive across Europe.

Ukraine suspended the transit of energy resources through the Druzhba pipeline following a series of strikes, which Kyiv has attributed to Russia. The shutdown has since ignited a broader diplomatic fracture, with Hungary and Slovakia both rejecting that explanation — instead accusing Ukraine of weaponizing energy flows to extract political concessions.

In a coordinated response, both Budapest and Bratislava have moved to suspend diesel fuel deliveries to Ukraine, deepening what is fast becoming one of the most contentious energy disputes on Europe's eastern flank.
