Zelenskyy Calls on Orban to Withhold Support from Russia, Not Ukraine

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday suggested that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban should block financial support to Russia rather than Ukraine, amid Budapest’s opposition to the European Union’s 20th sanctions package against Moscow.

“First of all, the pipeline was destroyed by Russia. So if Orban wants to block something — financial support — he can do it for Russia, not for Ukraine. We are not the reason for the destruction of this pipeline,” Zelenskyy told reporters.

He noted that satellite imagery confirms a Russian strike disrupted the Druzhba pipeline and added that such incidents are neither unprecedented nor likely to be the last. “Orban should talk to Putin, perhaps about an energy ceasefire or something similar,” he said.

European Council President Antonio Costa responded that the EU loan to Ukraine and the suspension of the Druzhba pipeline are unrelated. He said Ukraine would determine in the coming days how long it might take to restore the pipeline and emphasized that oil can still be supplied to Hungary and Slovakia through the Adriatic route.

Earlier, Orban had warned that Hungary would block the sanctions package unless Ukraine reopens the major pipeline that supplies Hungarian refineries with Russian crude. Officials in Budapest also indicated they would oppose a planned EU loan package intended to support Ukraine’s military and economic needs.

The Druzhba pipeline, or Friendship Pipeline, is among the world’s longest and largest oil networks, carrying Russian crude across several European countries.
