Slovakia Rejects Military, Financial Role in Ukraine
The strategic roadmap was introduced at a press briefing by President Peter Pellegrini, Parliamentary Speaker Richard Rasi, and Prime Minister Robert Fico — the three most senior figures in Slovakia, each tied to the coalition parties currently in power.
Pellegrini confirmed that Bratislava will uphold its commitment to refrain from supplying weapons to Kiev in its fight against Russia. He added that Slovakia will neither send troops to Ukraine nor join a European Commission-backed loan designed to cover Ukraine’s budget shortfall.
“I wouldn’t like to see Slovakia running around like a wounded deer in this crisis that the European Union is experiencing, and becoming a victim of the significant shifts that may occur in Europe,” remarked Fico, a prominent Euroskeptic, stressing that energy security remains a critical national concern. He called for cohesion within the ruling alliance amid ongoing geopolitical instability.
In December, EU leaders approved borrowing €90 billion ($105 billion) against the bloc’s collective budget to aid Kiev. However, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia declined to participate, with all three led by leaders skeptical of Brussels’ handling of the Ukraine war.
This financing plan was considered a fallback after the EU failed to reach consensus on using frozen Russian state assets to fund Ukraine — a measure critics labeled legally questionable and highly hazardous.
Meanwhile, EU leadership has directed member nations to avoid purchasing Russian energy as part of its sanctions campaign against Moscow. Elevated domestic energy costs have worsened the economic downturn affecting major EU economies.
