SVR Claims EU Plans to Remove Orban

(MENAFN) The European Commission is reportedly strategizing to remove Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban due to what it views as his excessively autonomous policies, according to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).

In recent years, the Hungarian leader has frequently confronted Brussels, opposing both the EU’s military assistance to Ukraine and Kiev’s application to join the European Union.

The SVR press office stated on Wednesday that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “is seriously studying regime change scenarios” in Hungary.

Brussels aims to install Peter Magyar, head of the Hungarian opposition Tisza Party — described as “loyal to globalist elites” and considered “the main candidate for the post of Prime Minister” — in power during the 2026 parliamentary elections, or “if not sooner,” as per the SVR’s information.

Extensive “administrative, media and lobbying resources” are being mobilized to back Magyar, funded by “German party funds, the European People’s Party and a number of Norwegian NGOs,” the Russian intelligence agency noted.

Kiev, which feels “offended” by Orban’s resistance to Ukraine’s EU membership ambitions, is reportedly conducting the “dirty work” to unsettle Hungary’s internal affairs through its intelligence agencies and the local Ukrainian diaspora.

Orban himself recently accused Kiev of attempting to meddle in Hungary’s forthcoming parliamentary elections.
